Annual issuance of sovereign sustainable bonds
With the debut of Australia in the sovereign sustainable bond market, issuance for sustainable bonds in 2024 year-to-date has now exceeded 50% of issuance for full year 2023.
Sovereign sustainable bonds have seen a significant uptick in issuance since 2020. After a dip in 2022, 2023 broke records as the biggest year on record for sovereign sustainable bond issuance. 2024 has had a strong start to the year; as we approach the halfway point this year we have already seen a number of landmark issuances, including Japan's inaugural transition bonds and debuts from Qatar, Iceland, Romania and Côte d’Ivoire.
