I do not know Amato personally and was unfamiliar with his work until this book came my way, but I found I The Carpathians, the Hutsuls, and Ukraine i to be an exceptionally interesting, enlightening, and authoritative study. It seems that the book stems from the author's doctoral dissertation, completed in 1998 at Indiana University, and that Amato has since written about environmental history topics in other parts of Europe and in Minnesota. There is surprisingly little information in the book about the author and how this book came about, and little information available as well at sites where the book is being sold online, so I undertook some internet research to satisfy my curiosity.
