Recyclers in the plastic industry are facing challenges due to low prices for virgin polymers, which is hindering efforts to promote circular plastics. The availability of cheap prime plastic has diverted companies away from using recycled materials. In 2023, there were efforts to promote sustainability and circularity in the plastic sector, with some brands promising to redesign packaging and increase the use of recycled plastics. However, the major challenge remains the constant supply of good quality recycled granules. The recycling industry suffered in the previous year due to low demand for recycled granules, and the situation was further exacerbated by Russia's war in Ukraine, which led to higher inflation and lower spending across Europe. The prices for prime plastics were low, providing tough competition for recycled granules. The availability of plastic scrap remains short in the market due to low consumption, and the Red Sea situation also affected plastic scrap in Europe. A new Waste Shipment Regulation (WSR) was approved by the European Union, which includes a ban on the export of plastic scrap to non-OECD countries. This regulation will change the flow of plastic waste globally, as Europe has a significant influence on global trade. [Extracted from the article]
