The associational life of late imperial Kiev, Ukraine was explored to gauge the participation of Jewish in the city's civil society. The author demonstrated how constructive interethnic encounters between Jews, Russians and Ukrainians in the city formed despite political and societal conditions that often discouraged them. It is inferred that these positive interactions were made possible by voluntary association. The nature of interethnic relations in the late Russian empire was examined.
