The topic of the research concerning writing and education in Maramureş is almost unknown and seldom researched. The present attempt proposes to be only a thematic introduction, representing the absolutely necessary first steps in order to complete the image of the epoch. The scarcity of documents preserved in archives from Romania, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Ukraine referring to the history of Maramureş, partially known, does not allow the formulation of firm conclusions, our research requiring completion with information from the archives of the old European universities. The present study focuses on those who had occupied political, administrative, economic or military functions, on those who could read and write, magistrates, literati, and noblemen of Maramureş. During the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century, like in all Transylvania, the viscounts of Maramureş used to bear the title of magistrate, a title that did not necessarily refer to their education. The literati represent an example for the clergy's cultural monopoly, although initially this term designated an educated person. The secularisation of writing in townships, due to the so-called literati, usually inhabitants of the townships and royal boroughs of the crown, happened at the end of the 14th and beginning of the 15th century. As concerns the high rank noblemen with Romanian roots who certainly knew reading and writing since the Middle Ages, some families can be enumerated e.g.: the Dolha, the Drăgoşeşti, who became Drâgffy of Beltiug after they had bought the estate with the same name. Nicolae and loan, but especially Bartolomeu, held high offices and positions in Transylvania and at the court of the Hungarian King, offices which could not be occupied without the knowledge of reading and writing. Along the centuries the Romanian gentry and especially its representatives who held political, economic and military functions in the county, had the knowledge of reading and writing. We are almost sure that in the 17th century the majority of the Romanian noblemen in office, especially in the Upper Rural Districts and Cosău, with a predominantly Romanian population, especially the noblemen's judges wrote cursively Hungarian. Formerly, some of them, such as the Coteţ family of Şieu, had been writing Romanian using the Cyrillic alphabet since the 15th century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
