The paper describes the academic path of dr. Josip Plemelj, a Slovenian mathematician of world renown, the first rector of the University of Ljubljana and her longtime professor. The emphasis is not on his scholarly work, with which he established himself in international mathematical circles before the First World War, but on his pedagogical work, which he spent over fifty years, first as a private assistant professor at the Faculty of Philosophy in Vienna, where he studied and received his PhD, then as a professor at the University of Chernivtsi in present-day Ukraine, and after World War I as a professor at the University of Ljubljana. Here, his heavy load of lectures and exams, his separation from foreign scientific centers and various other obstacles prevented him from continuing his previously successful research in mathematics. He therefore devoted his efforts to the mathematical education of the young. The article presents his lectures, his attitude towards students, and his exams and doctorates. He promoted almost all pre-war high school professors in mathematics and physics. Among his three PhD students, he chose Ivan Vidav as his successor, who after the Second World War successfully continued Plemelj's research and his teaching work in mathematics. Prispevek opisuje akademsko pot dr. Josipa Plemlja, slovenskega matematika svetovnega slovesa, prvega rektorja ljubljanske univerze in njenega dolgoletnega profesorja. Tu so mu velika obremenjenost s predavanji in izpiti, ločenost od tujih znanstvenih centrov in različne druge ovire onemogočile nadaljevanje prej uspešnega raziskovanja v matematiki.
