The article examines how Soviet films were treated before and during World War II by the British Board of Film Censors (BBFC) and by British local authorities who had the legal power to cut or ban films due to be shown in their areas. It describes how Iver Montagu conducted disputes with the BBFC over political and other types of film censorship in the 1930s. Some Soviet or Soviet-related films that were suppressed before or during the war include Sergei Eisenstein's "Battleship Potemkin," Herbert Wilcox's "Dawn" and Abram Room's "Bed and Sofa."
