In the years of 1918-1920 hundreds of pogroms occurred in the Ukraine with fateful consequences for Jewish society of Eastern Europe. In March, 1920, a violent shooting incident occurred in Tel Hai. A month later, in April, 1920, there was violence in Jerusalem, and on May 1, 1921, additional cases of violence throughout Palestine. Did the pogroms in the Ukraine affect the manner in which the Jewish community in Palestine (Yishuv) understood the violent incidents between Jews and Arabs, and if so, in what way? Furthermore, did the violence in Palestine impact the way that the members of the Yishuv perceived the pogroms in the Ukraine between the years 1918-1920? This study addresses the attitude of the Jewish community of Palestine in the twenties towards Jewish self-defense in both Palestine and the Ukraine. It asks why the Yishuv highlights the heroism of Trumpeldor and his comrades in Tel Hai, and the defense activity of Jabotinsky in Jerusalem; yet ignores the self-defense and acts of heroism in the Ukraine, while, in that case, emphasizing aspects of massacre and helplessness?
