The European Union has held a conference to discuss its geopolitical role. The EU is facing an uncertain environment and geopolitical rivalries, which are leading to an erosion of the rules-based international order. The EU must define its spheres of influence more clearly and advance its own expansion in order to be geopolitically capable. The discussions at the conference focused on the systemic dimension, the security dimension, and the global economic dimension of the EU. It was emphasized that democracy and the rule of law are non-negotiable as the foundation of the EU integration project. New analytical approaches were also discussed to understand the EU's political construct and reconsider the functioning of the EU in light of current crises. The conference discussed the role of the EU as a "reinsurance state" and "interventionist state," as well as the geopolitical necessity of EU expansion. It was emphasized that in crisis situations, the EU provides resources to member states without fundamentally encroaching on their sovereignty. The discussions also focused on threats to European security, such as Russian aggression against Ukraine, the erosion of the rules-based world order, the crisis of liberal democracy, and the climate crisis. It was noted that effective cooperation between NATO and the EU is important to ensure European security. The German role in European security policy was also discussed. The IEP annual conference discussed the increasing geopolitical rivalries and the erosion of the rules-based order. The EU must further develop its geopolitical role and interests in times of crisis. The discussions focused on the security and economic implications, as well as strategies and instruments to address these challenges. The EU must uphold its core values such as democracy and the rule of law, adopt institutional reforms, and admit new member states in order to thrive in an uncertain world.
