After announcing its independence in 1990 Ukraine has undergone a series of social and political changes that, among others, have also resulted in increased criminality, low living standards, extreme poverty, homelessness and the problem of street children. In 2006 there are already thousands of children who live on the streets of almost every Ukrainian city and they have formed themselves into groups, that could be described as subcultures. The purpose of this paper is to present the quantitative results of research conducted in the Ukrainian city of Makeevka in 2000 that are evaluated in a longitudinal from 2000 until 2006 with particular emphasis on dynamic elements of the phenomena. Two main findings emerge from this research: the identity of an individual street child demands a street-life experience; the subculture of street children in Makeevka has developed an entirely new form of addiction -- social addiction.
