The article discusses the role of two newspapers in Italy's decision to halt its use of nuclear energy. In 1964 Italy ranked 4th among nations in terms of electricity generated by nuclear energy. Subsequent events, including the Chernobyl accident in 1986, began to turn public opinion against nuclear energy. Two leading papers, Corriere della Sera and la Repubblica, covered nuclear energy extensively in the aftermath of Chernobyl. The papers presented technological, sociological, and ideological viewpoints. Ultimately voters decided against continuing Italy's nuclear program.
