The topic of this thesis deals with the history of Orthodox monasticism in todays Ukraine focusing specifically on the so-called Lavra of the Dormition of the Theotokos, called Pochaev. In 882, the Varangian Prince Oleg unifying the Slavic tribes founded the State of Kiev. From the 14th until the 20th c. the various regions of todays Ukraine were shared between the various states of Lithuania, Poland, the Crimean Khanate, the Russian Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and finally the Soviet Union, until 1991, when Ukraine became an independent state. Christianity in the wider Ukrainian setting first appeared in the then Byzantine Crimea (Tauric Peninsula) and subsequently in Kiev, where in 988, with the assistance of Byzantium, the Christianization of Kievan Rus took place. Naturally the first hierarchy of the Church in the Kievan state were comprised of bishops of Greek origin and were subject to the Ecumenical Patriarchate until 1686, when the Church was placed under the Patriarchate of Moscow, where it belongs to until today with a special autonomous status. Similarly, monasticism in the Ukrainian land also appeared first in Crimea and from there progressed also to the Kievan state, where in 1051, the famous Kievan Caves Lavra was founded by the Venerable Anthony of the Caves, alongside many other important monasteries. The Pochaev Lavra of the Dormition of the Theotokos is located in the area of Kremenets in the Ternopil Province (Oblast) in Western Ukraine. According to tradition, monks of the Kievan Caves Lavra founded the monastery in 1240. The generous donation of the noble Orthodox countess Anna Goyska contributed significantly to the construction of the monastery, who, in 1597, built the monastery complex, which originally did not have a structure and the organization of a monastic community, under the head of an abbot. Other great benefactors of the Pochaev Lavra were Earl Nicholas Pototsky and landowner Theodore and Eve Domashevski. The first abbot of the Lavra was the Venerable Job Zelizo. In 1721, Uniates occupied the Pochaev Lavra and it was returned back to the Orthodox in 1831. Despite the difficult conditions of the various periods, such as the attack of the Ottomans in 1675, the Uniate period, the Austro-Hungarian occupation, the two World Wards, the persecution during the Soviet period and after the fall of the Soviet Union during the years of the independence of Ukraine, when the Uniates and Schismatics occupied Orthodox churches and monasteries, Pochaev Lavra was able to survive and continue to fulfill its work. Today the Lavra is the most important Orthodox spiritual and pilgrimage centre of Western Ukraine, the guardian of Orthodox tradition and life between the Uniate and Roman Catholic populations, preserving many great relics from the history of the monastery and of the country.
