The aim of this study is to measure the intellectual capital performance of European market banks. Although physical capital is essential for banks to operate, it is intellectual capital that determines the quality of services provided to customers. As an explanatory study, ours also employs an international cross-analysis to investigate the efficiencies of banks in utilizing their intellectual capital. After an in-depth analysis of the Italian banking market, we analyse the following countries and their respective banking systems: Germany, Spain and Italy for Central Europe; Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway for Northern Europe and Bulgaria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Ukraine and Slovenia for Eastern Europe. The object is to investigate the impact of IC (through the VAIC coefficient described below and its components) on banking performances using a parametric model. A non-parametric model is also engaged in the second part of the study.
