It was proposed to estimate the toxicity of physiologically active metal species from a change in the functional characteristics of the phytocenosis of surface water (daily variations in pH and the concentration of dissolved O2 in water of model mesocosms with a given phytocenosis biomass). The effect of Zn(II), Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), and Co(II) on the functional characteristics of phytoplankton and pond weed was evaluated by a toxicity coefficient, which showed a change in pH or in the concentration of dissolved O2 after a 1-h action of 1 mg ( 1 mmol) of a metal on the functioning of the unit of a phytocenosis biomass in unit volume of test natural water.
