The interaction between a rigid circular pipe with a purely cohesive isotropic soil layer underneath is studied from the point of view of the bearing capacity as a function of the embedment depth. The analysis is performed within the framework of the theory of Yield design, assuming either perfect bonding at the interface between the pipe and the soil layer or a perfectly smooth interface. Lower- and upper-bound estimates have been determined for the bearing capacity through the construction of admissible stress fields or the consideration of potential collapse mechanisms. The obtained estimates show that the contribution of gravity forces reduces to the addition of Archimedes' uplift thrust due to the soil and improve previous results by Murff, Wagner & Randolph, in the case of a smooth interface condition.
