With the aid of acid-base interactions in the melt (by adding F-), it is shown that discharge potentials of ionic forms of tungsten may be controlled by changing shape and composition of electrochemically active species. The potentials in question are close to those of carbon evolution from carbonic acid. This makes it possible to run their joint reduction and synthesize tungsten carbide.
