Ukrainian clays have been available in Western Europe since the end of 1992. The excellent ceramic properties of these clays led to a boom in the production of stoneware tiles, starting in Italy. The quantity being produced currently tops 330 Mm2. Over this same period, the production of Monocottura tiles, made predominantly of Westerwald clay, has been steadily decreasing. A parallel slump in exports of clay from the Westerwald to Italy is causing severe problems for German clay producers. Six Ukrainian companies have established themselves in the international clay market since 1992. Exports of clay now exceed 3.5 Mt/a, including about half of it delivered to Italy for the production of Gres Porcellanato tiles. The Ukraine has taken over from the Westerwald as the most important supplier of clay.
