We consider a method to solve a three-dimensional problem on concentration of stresses on the surface of a pit. Numerical realization of the method permits studying the effect of the pit surface geometry, its depth as well as elastic properties of the material (isotropic or orthotropic) on the value of stresses and displacements for particular shapes of pits. It is established that the stress concentration occurs at the edges of the pit surface. Variation of parameters in the surface solution allows a transition to a plane cylinder with a ring neck.
