Cathodic transformations of perfluoro-2,4-dimethyl-3-ethylpentane and its unsaturated analogs

Electrochemical reduction of perfluoro-2,4-dimethyl-3-ethylpentane (C9F20) and its unsaturated analogs, i.e., the perfluoro-2,4-dimethyl-3-ethyl-3-pentyl (C9F19.) stable radical and a mixture of isomeric trimers of hexafluoropropylene (C9F18), is studied. It is shown that the reduction of C9F20 is a multistep process, is accompanied by a cleavage of the C-F bond, and occurs via formation of C9F19., C9F18, and other intermediates of the carbanion nature.
