L'A. s'intéresse à un groupe de vieux-croyants russes (les Lipovane), installés dans des pays limitrophes de la Russie (Roumanie, Bulgarie, Ukraine). Encore aujourd hui, ceux-ci revendiquent une culture et une identité propres. L'A. examine plus particulièrement : la localisation des foyers démographiques lipovane ; l'histoire des déplacements géographiques du groupe ; ses spécificités linguistiques et culturelles ; son identité religieuse ; son évolution et le lien continu qu'il entretient avec le passé ; enfin, ses relations avec les autres groupes ethniques et sub-ethniques des pays où il s'est installé.
