Many Swabian colonies were founded between 1803 and 1823 in the Crimean, the Southern Ukraine and Transcaucasia. The Swabians living in Transcaucasia were deported to Northern Kazakhstan at the beginning of the Second World War because they were ethnic German. The sound system of Swabian dialect has been exposed to two sets of influences : the Russian language and Frankonian dialect. The many borrowings of Russian and increasing bilinguism meant that dialect speakers start to pronounce borrowings according to the orthoepic rules of Russian. This means that voiced and palatised consonants which were not present in the original dialect infiltrate into the dialect system.
