Retrospective dosimetry of Iodine-131 exposures using Iodine-129 and Caesium-137 inventories in soils – A critical evaluation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident in parts of Northern Ukraine

The radiation exposure of thyroid glands due to 131I as a consequence of the Chernobyl accident was investigated retrospectively based on 129I and 137Cs inventories in soils in Northern Ukraine. To this end, soil samples from 60 settlements were investigated for 129I, 127I, and 137Cs by AMS, ICP-MS and gammaspectrometry, respectively. Sampling was performed between 2004 und 2007. In those parts of Northern Ukraine investigated here the 129I and 137Cs inventories are well correlated, the variability of the individual 129I/137Cs ratios being, however, high. Both the 129I and 137Cs inventories in the individual 5 samples for each settlement allowed estimating the uncertainties of the inventories due to the variability of the radionuclide deposition and consequently of the retrospective dosimetry. Thyroid equivalent doses were calculated from the 129I and the 137Cs inventories using aggregated dose coefficients for 5-year old and 10-year-old children as well as for adults. The highest thyroid equivalent doses (calculated from 129I inventories) were calculated for Wladimirowka with 30 Gy for 5-years-old children and 7 Gy for adults. In 35 settlements of contamination zone II the geometric mean of the thyroid equivalent doses was 2.0 Gy for 5-years-old children with a geometric standard deviation (GSD) of 3.0. For adults the geometric mean was 0.47 Gy also with a GSD of 3.0. In more than 25 settlements of contamination zone III the geometric means were 0.82 Gy for 5-years old children with a GSD of 1.8 and 0.21 Gy for adults (GSD 1.8). For 45 settlements, the results of the retrospective dosimetry could be compared with thyroid equivalent doses calculated using time-integrated 131I activities of thyroids which were measured in 1986. Thus, a critical evaluation of the results was possible which demonstrated the general feasibility of the method, but also the associated uncertainties and limitations.

Радіаційне опромінення щитовидної залози йодом-131 як наслідок аварії на Чорнобильській АЕС досліджені ретроспективно на основі товарно-матеріальних запасів йоду-129 і цезію-137 в ґрунтах на півночі України. Зразки ґрунту з 60 населених пунктів були досліджені на вміст йоду-129, йоду-127 і цезію-137 за допомогою AMS, ICP-MS і гаммаспектрометра, відповідно. Відбір проб проводився в період з 2004 по 2007. У тих частинах Північної України,де досліджений вміст йоду-129 і цезію-137 добре корелюють, спостерігається мінливість окремих коефіцієнтів 129I / 137Cs. Запаси йоду-129 і цезію-137 в окремих 5 зразках для кожного населеного пункту дозволило оцінити невизначеність запасів через мінливість радіонуклідного осадження і ретроспективної дозиметрії. Щитовидні еквівалентні дози були розраховані виходячи з вмісту йоду-129 і товарно-матеріальних запасів з використанням агрегованих доз цезію-137 коефіцієнти для 5-річних і 10-річних дітей, а також для дорослих. Найвищий еквівалент щитовидної залози дози (розраховується з запасів йоду-129) були розраховані для Володимирівки з 30 Гр за 5-річний діти і 7 Гр для дорослих. У 35 населених пунктах зони забруднення II геометричній середнє значення щитовидної еквівалентної дози склала 2,0 Гр для 5-річних дітей з геометричним стандартним відхиленням (GSD) 3,0. Для дорослих середня геометрична була 0,47 Гр також з GSD 3.0. У більш ніж 25 населених пунктах ІІІ Зони забруднення геометричні засоби були 0,82 Гр для дітей 5-ти років з GSD 1,8 і 0,21 Гр для дорослих (GSD 1.8). Для 45 населених пунктів, результати ретроспективної дозиметрії можна порівняти з еквівалентною дозою щитовидної залози , розраховані з використанням тимчасових інтегрованих доз йоду-131, які щитовидній залозі, виміряні в 1986. Таким чином, критична оцінка результатів стало можливим, який продемонстрував не тільки загальну доцільність методів, а й пов’язані з ними невизначеності і обмеження.
