At its VIth session (Freising, June 1990), the Catholic-Orthodox Commission on theological dialogue, for the first time, directly tackled the ecclesiological question of "uniatism". The introductory part of this article recalls the recent political developments which, by restoring religious freedom to the Oriental Catholic Churches of the Ukraine and Rumania, made the "uniate question" a most burning issue for the whole of the Orthodox Church. The central part of the article presents the text of Freising underlining its pastoral opportuneness and its ecclesiological significance but noting the insufficiently developed identity of the notion of "uniatism". Finally, the concluding section points out some of the requirements which an ecclesiology of sister Churches which are in communion imposes on the Roman Catholic Church in its dialogue with the Orthodox Church.
