After the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the emergence of the new young states, new and different national priorities began to be mapped out in the post-Soviet space. A generation of people grew up for whom the existence of a single unified country is a thing of the past. This circumstance has led to the investigation of the transformation of the rising generation's sense of national identity as that transformation proceeded in the past ten years. This article reports a study which focuses on the formation of the ethnic ideas of Ukranian and Russian school students. A survey was conducted on students in the upper grades of schools in the city of Kiev. A similar survey was conducted among Russian school students in Moscow. Among other things, the author discusses ethnic identity as perceived by school students, as well as the character of ethnic stereotypes. (Contains 5 tables.)
